Almost everyone I talk to is navigating some form of stress, anxiety, or overwhelm. Whether it stems from health struggles, caring for aging loved ones, a shifting political climate, or the relentless pressures of daily life, none of us are immune. At times, these emotions feel all-consuming, making it easy to get lost in negativity. So how do we counteract these heavy feelings?
In a word: gratitude.
It might sound cliché or easier said than done, but I’ve learned firsthand how powerful gratitude can be. A few years ago, I found myself in a season of intense anxiety—one that felt suffocating, like a weight pressing down on my chest. Desperate for relief, I worked with a counselor who introduced me to a simple yet profound exercise: creating a Positive Inventory.
She challenged me to list 100 absolute positives—things I could wake up to and count on every single day. It took longer than I expected, but the process itself was soothing. Keeping that list visible became a grounding force. On difficult days, I could look at it and remember that the stressors I faced were small compared to the many things worth being grateful for. This practice, among other things, helped lift me out of that dark place.

Years ago, I attended a lecture that left a lasting impression. The speaker shared a simple yet profound truth: The key to joy is gratitude.
Here are some takeaways that I carry with me every day—I hope they resonate with you, too:
Gratitude doesn’t erase hardship, but it brings healing. It won’t eliminate suffering, but it can radiate hope and perspective.
Gratitude is more than a feeling—it’s a choice. We can actively choose to focus on the positives rather than be consumed by the negatives.
Press pause. In the busyness of life, take moments to recognize the good. Every day holds guaranteed joys—if we take the time to notice.
Let nature remind you. No two sunsets are the same. Every starry night is unique. You’ll never see the same formation twice when looking up at the clouds. These small wonders refresh the soul.
A grateful heart perceives meaning. While our eyes see only light and our ears hear only sound, gratitude allows us to recognize the more profound significance in everyday moments.
Gratitude leads to action. When we cultivate thankfulness, we become more patient, compassionate, and generous—because feeling good inspires us to do good.
Gratitude transforms how we experience life—not as a constant test, but as a gift. It can enrich relationships, strengthen families, and lighten our daily work.
So take a moment to pause. Reflect on your Positive Inventory. Step away from the digital noise, take a deep breath, and truly see the good around you. Count your blessings—however small they may seem. You’ll find that your peace of mind grows with each grateful thought.
Joy isn’t found in having a perfect life but in appreciating the one you already have.
